August '23. My first month in Central Asia..

I was preparing for a four-to-five-day trek through the Tien Shan mountains, but I still needed to buy some camping equipment. So I knocked on the first rental shop door I could find in the city of Karakol. The entrance wasn’t fancy — just a heavy, hammer-like push handle and a single sheet of paper taped to the door that read: “Call, and you will be discovered.” Moments later, from a gate a few steps to my left, a grayish, Obelix-like beard welcomed me inside. That was the first time I met Igor, my Kyrgyz friend.
