One day, in rural Kyrgyzstan, I set out for a one-day trek to see one of the most stunning lakes in the central part of the country.

As night fell and I reached the lake, a little shepherd signaled for me to rest. The next morning, I woke up in his family’s yurt, and what had begun as a one-night plan turned into a full week living alongside a nomadic community.
